I agree with Governor Perry. He held a news conference this week to announce plans to mandate drug testing for any person in Texas who receives TANF, food stamps, or, generally, any public assistance. The move, he said, was to insure that no state funds would or could possibly be used to purchase illicit drugs or to support anyone in such a way that they could use other funds at their disposal for such purchases. His emphasis was solely on the travesty that the hard-earned tax dollars of the citizens of Texas might be so misspent by the state's poor. He did not say that drug and alcohol abuse and addiction in the state's poorest neighborhoods is a great human tragedy as well. But I'm sure he meant to.
